Flippa Ball

Flippa Ball

Atlantis Flippa Ball League

Played at Diocesan School for Girls Aquatic Centre and Epsom Girls Grammar School, in Epsom Auckland on Sundays during Term time.

The league is one of New Zealand’s largest and most successful and has been running out of Central Auckland for over 15 years, initially it was run by New Zealand Water Polo and since 2023 has been run by Atlantis City Water Polo and Aquatics.  The league attracts Primary Schools from Central/Western/Eastern Auckland.  On a typical Sunday there will be over 500 children playing at various times throughout the day.  The league can offer both Flippa Ball (played in shallow water) and Mini Polo (played in Deep Water) and the teams are from year 3 to year 6.

Alongside and included in the league entry fee is Neptune Express, this is a 20 minute training programme guiding the children through the basic fundamentals of water polo and also adding a water safety element and well as a whole lot of fun to the programme.  This is run either before or after the game dependent on the schedule.  By offering this programme we have seen the improvement in the skills of our younger players in Central Auckland Leagues as they move into playing Water Polo to be exceptional.

In addition to Neptune Express, Atlantis offer Neptune Programme, providing a pathway from Flippa Ball/Mini Polo to Water Polo. See Neptune on our website.

What is Flippa Ball?

Activity:

  • Playing in the water is FUN and Flippa Ball gives the children the option of playing a ball sport in the water. Children of all sizes love it and it is an easy way for children to become active.

Teamwork:

  • Teamwork is FUN and Flippa Ball  helps children to understand how to play in a team so that different children with different skills can work together to achieve a goal.

Ball Skills:

  • Passing and catching and the coordination required to do these things are the basic building block for playing many ball sports. This is a FUN way for children to learn and reinforce a skill that are FUNdamental and transferable.

Swimming:

  • Swimming is a core skill but the level of our water competence is dropping. Flippa Ball  gets children into the water having FUN. Swimming is part of the activity and the better you swim the better the children can play. This is a FUN way to get children into the pool to learn and practice swimming.

Water Confidence:

  • “My child was scared of being splashed – now he plays Flippa Ball!!!!”  We hear stories like this all the time. Flippa Ball is the FUN way for children to feel comfortable in the water. Once they are confident, they can go on to many other aquatic sports.
